My Inner Vegetarian

A saying I’ve heard attributed to Ali (ra) is ‘Don’t make your stomach a graveyard for animals’. It’s a sobering image, and while it’s not a call for total abstinence from meat, it’s an invitation to moderation and awareness of what we are eating. I’m not a vegetarian but dislike eating meat often, and dislike even more cooking it. I am much happier cooking and eating lentils, chickpeas or vegetables. After three days of having meat for dinner I start feeling tense, anxious, miserable and full of dread. I wonder how much of that is caused by the meat itself - a residue of the animals’ last experiences that have been absorbed into my system?
